Pull on your Hair, Pull on your Pout

I decided to start making ordinary objects out of unusual materials. I believe the combination of the two can be quite off putting. I decided to make wire wool gloves. Below is the documentation of the process. I wanted to make the gloves look scrappy and incorporate stitch.

Beachy head

I hadn't been feeling well recently and decided a trip to the beach might do my lungs some good! My main aim was to try and find some interesting textures to work with in my project. I got a few nice drawings and some excellent photos ( my camera reacts well to sunlight) However the beach doesn't make people feel uneasy, quite the opposite so I had a bit of trouble finding good textures for this purpose.

I think if I ever want to look at land art I will return to the beach.

Gilbert and George

I decided to look at artists who's work i don't really like that much. I think the reason I have always been put off by their work was that it comes across as only being made to shock. The nudity doesn't really bother me but at the same i don't really want to see an older man's arsehole, and all the poo is a little off putting. Generally I find the work that uses allot of colour more effective than the black and white work. I think it is just because the colour is more striking.

I like how involved Gilbert and George are in their work. Their bodies are the main focus and their unique partnership. I would like to perhaps involve myself in the my work a little more. I want to concentrated on a little more video work. I've done quite a bit in the past and I enjoy it.

Stick Boy and Match Girl (suggestions needed!)

At the moment I am trying to finish off my research which is going quite well I feel, I plan to look into more artist that deal with discomfort as I experiment with materials.

List of materials: red wax (used for sealing envelopes) I though it would work well with the victorian theme. Wire Wool, that stuff makes me feel ill it's so horrible. Cut hair ( the stuff you get on the floor in hairdressers) I worked with it last year and it prickles and itches. Coarse wool and wool in general, I can't wear wool gloves especially if my nails are short. Cheapo velvet.

I want to find out what makes everyone else cringe, I think it will help the final outcome. So leave me your suggestions in the comments box.

Skips

Me and Calum went Skip raiding. Twas pretty successful, I got myself some lovely metal (not sure what to do with it yet though) I've been cracking on with some sketchbook work and feeling like I'm getting something out of it. I've been experimenting with stitch and layering different papers. I feel that texture will be quite important in this project.

I want to look at materials that make me feel uneasy, like coarse wool, cheap velvet and wire wool (yuck).

I remembered a video from when I was younger. A metz advert about the Judderman. I love the german expressionist style.

Vincent, Short Movie by Tim Burton

Vincent is a Short film about a boy named Vincent Malloy who dreams that he is Vincent Price, it is also narrated by the wonderful Vincent Price. Tim Burton has had a large impact on my work ever since I saw The Nightmare before Christmas for the first time. I often find that even my dress sense is affected by his work.

The subject matter can often be misread as dark and scary. However I think he is trying to illustrate misunderstood characters who have quirks. There is allot of humour in Burton's work and I think that's what appeals to me. I have always been interested in dark comedy.




I experimented with drawing myself as a Tim Burton character, the above was my favourite.

Good Afternoon,

This is the first time I've had a blog with actual purpose. I hope I can use it well!

The basic idea for my project is to create a basic feeling in the viewer. I'm thinking nervous, I wanna make them squirm!

I've been looking at the work of Jean Cocteau

I'm particularly interested in his line drawings and have been experimenting and drawing my own versions using photos of myself.

To develop my work with line further I looked at the works of Tim Burton and Edward Gorey. my favourite by Gorey is the Gashleycrumb Tinies.
